Baseball Recap: Union City Comes Up Short

Union City had lost three straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 5-8 to make it four. They came up short against the Winchester Community Golden Falcons, falling 16-2. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Golden Falcons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-0 back in April.

Union City saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brayden Huggins, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run. Huggins is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged two or more in each of the last three games he's played.

As for Winchester Community, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 12-3. Considering they have won nine games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

On Winchester Community's side, Dravin Whitehead made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Whitehead was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs and one stolen base. Those four runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Bryce Tippett was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jace Allen, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Union City will face off against Cambridge City Lincoln at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Winchester Community, they will square off against Wapahani at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Golden Falcons 3.2, the Raiders 3.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.
