Softball Recap: Union City Sets Scoring Season-High Against Mercyhurst Prep

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Union City). Everything went their way against the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers on Thursday as they made off with a 23-4 win. The victory continues a trend for the Bears in their matchups with the Lakers: they've now won six in a row.

Kaegann Gregor was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and not a single walk). Those ten strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Desirae Brown and Alissa Leech did most of the damage at the plate: Brown went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, two runs, and one double, while Leech went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. Those three hits gave Brown a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cheyenne Cummings, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

Union City was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .412. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Union City's win bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Mercyhurst Prep, they are on a 16-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Union City is taking a road trip to take on Seneca at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Mercyhurst Prep will be paying especially close attention to the Bears' match: after the Bears face off against the Bobcats, they'll take on Mercyhurst Prep again at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
