Basketball Recap: Arvada Comes Up Short

If Arvada was riding high fresh off their 61-21 takedown of Aurora West College Prep Academy last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Arvada Bulldogs were dealt a 56-27 defeat at the hands of the Middle Park Panthers on Thursday. The Bulldogs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-14.

Arvada's loss came despite strong showings from Lily Heck and Carmen Medina. Heck posted eight points and ten boards, while Medina earned four points and seven rebounds. Medina is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last three games she's played.

Even though they lost, Arvada smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Middle Park only seven offensive rebounds.

Middle Park had a senior duo take command as Aubree Hanson dropped a double-double with 14 points and ten steals and Blaire Hester went 8-for-13 en route to 18 points and eight steals. Hester is becoming a predictor of Middle Park's success: when she posts at least five steals the team is 4-2 (and 6-7 when she doesn't). Dana Bell was another key player, going 5-for-9 on her way to 10 points and three steals.

Arvada's loss dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Middle Park, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-9.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Arvada will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Aurora West College Prep Academy at 5:30 p.m. on February 24th. Middle Park will also get a bit of a break before their next game: they'll face off against Alameda at 5:30 p.m. on February 25th.
