Softball Recap: Manhattan Comes Up Short

Manhattan extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping their season record down to 11-6 in the process. They came up short against the Shepherd Mustangs, falling 9-1. Unfortunately, that's the sixth time they've come up short against the Mustangs this season, with their most recent defeat being a 5-2 loss last Saturday.

As for Shepherd, the victory keeps they at an undefeated 23-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 12.9 runs this season.

For Shepherd's part, Charity Dunn and Krista Dunn were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Dunn didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Krista struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. At the plate, Dunn went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Krista went 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was Krista's first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Breelyn Fulton, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Brooke Werth was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Manhattan does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Shepherd, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, a 12-2 victory against Florence-Carlton on the 24th.
