Baseball Game Preview: Mountain Crest Mustangs vs. West Field Longhorns

The Mountain Crest Mustangs will face off against the West Field Longhorns at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

On Wednesday, Mountain Crest came up short against Ridgeline and fell 5-2. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Mountain Crest saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ethan Nielsen, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

Meanwhile, West Field made easy work of Green Canyon on Wednesday and carried off a 15-6 victory. With that win, the Longhorns brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Brady Penland was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. West Field is undefeated when Penland allows one or fewer hits, but 7-8 otherwise. Penland was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Tyce Abbott, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. He has become a key player for West Field: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 5-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Kason Taylor, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

West Field always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .537. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

West Field is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Mountain Crest, their loss dropped their record down to 11-5.
