Baseball Recap: Cardinal Newman Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Cardinal Newman extended their winning streak to three on Wednesday, bumping their season record up to 12-10 in the process. They had just enough and edged out the Maria Carrillo Pumas 4-2. That's two games straight that the Cardinals have won by exactly two runs.

Josh Jannicelli tossed a big game, striking out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Cardinal Newman saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Caden Owen, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run. Madden White was another, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Cardinal Newman hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive games.

As for Maria Carrillo, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-12 record this season. Having soared to a lofty 12 runs in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.

On Maria Carrillo's side, Norman Shinn was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed six innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits.

Cardinal Newman will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Pumas: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
