Baseball Game Preview: Lafayette Commodores vs. Pontotoc Warriors

For the second straight game, Lafayette will face off against Pontotoc. Lafayette will welcome Pontotoc at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Lafayette is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.

Lafayette proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by six) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over Pontotoc. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Commodores have posted since March 1st.

For Pontotoc's part, Corbyn Clayton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up ten Ks. What's more, Clayton gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in February.

At the plate, Pontotoc saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hadley Corley, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Pontotoc has also traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-5 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the defeats came by an average of only one runs. Lafayette's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-6.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Lafayette has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Pontotoc struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
