McAllen Memorial typically has all the answers at home, but on Tuesday Vela proved too difficult a challenge. They escaped with a win against the Mustangs by the margin of a single free throw, 46-45. Winning may never get old, but the Sabercats sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.

Vela's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gabby Jaramillo, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 16 rebounds. That's the most boards Jaramillo has posted since back in November of 2025. Another player making a difference was Madison Cantu, who put up 13 points and three steals.

Vela's record is now 24-8. As for McAllen Memorial, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 26-8 record.

Vela and McAllen Memorial should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. The Sabercats (ranked 276th) will meet McAllen (ranked 577th) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, McAllen Memorial will square off against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial at 6:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (230 vs. 1166).
