Preview: Savio Eagles vs. Hyde Park Panthers
The Savio Eagles will head out on the road to take on the Hyde Park Panthers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
Savio suffered their biggest defeat since December 1, 2023 on Tuesday. They took a serious blow against Regents, falling 64-26. Savio has not had much luck with Regents recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Despite their defeat, Savio saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Matthew Blood, who scored eight points along with nine rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Blood has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last eight times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jake Espinoza, who scored 11 points.
Meanwhile, Hyde Park was beaten by St. Michael's 96-31 on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Hyde Park can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1034th, while St. Michael's is ranked seventh).
Savio has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost nine of their last 11 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-14 record this season. As for Hyde Park, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-15.
Savio came up short against Hyde Park in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, falling 65-55. Can Savio avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
