It'll be a Battle of the Birds when Southwest Eagles take on Ferguson Falcons at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Southwest will be strutting in after a victory while Ferguson will be coming in after a defeat.
Southwest barely beat St. Brendan the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Southwest put the hurt on St. Brendan with a sharp 7-1 win on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won three games by six runs or more so far this season.
Southwest got a great performance from Pedro Martinez as he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and not a single walk). What's more, Martinez gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Max Rico, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits. Another player making a difference was Yuxnel Santiago, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Ferguson didn't have quite enough to beat TERRA Environmental on Friday and fell 7-6. The Falcons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Justin Rodriguez made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Davin Vigoa, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Ferguson's loss dropped their record down to 3-5-1. As for Southwest, they moved to 4-4 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Southwest has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Ferguson struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Southwest couldn't quite get it done against Ferguson in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 8-3. Can Southwest avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
