Softball Recap: Pierce City Takes a Loss

Pierce City had lost three straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 3-10 to make it four. They came up short against the Lockwood Tigers, falling 13-2. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Eagles couldn't push the score so high this time.

As for Lockwood, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 15-5. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by eight runs or more this season.

For Lockwood's part, Kallie Griffin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 13 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Griffin has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, five RBI, and three runs. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Lockwood got a big performance out of Reese Whitesell, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Gracyn Clawson was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.

Coming up, Pierce City is taking a road trip to square off against Exeter at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Lockwood, they will host New Heights Christian Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 6.1 runs per game this season.
