If Mount Calvary Christian beats Greenwood with five runs on Thursday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two contests with that exact score. The Chargers walked away with a 5-1 victory over Lancaster County Christian on Tuesday.
Ben Gerlach was excellent, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Caleb Matesevac also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Greenwood hadn't done well against East Juniata recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Wildcats blew past the Tigers 16-5. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Wildcats considering their one-run performance the game before.
Owen Losch was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Greenwood's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 2-9 when he doesn't). Ben Jones was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and two RBI.
Greenwood kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.3 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 8.8.
Mount Calvary Christian's record is now 9-3. As for Greenwood, their record now sits at 4-10.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mount Calvary Christian has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Greenwood struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Mount Calvary Christian suffered a grim 8-1 defeat to Greenwood in their previous meeting back in May of 2023. Can the Chargers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
