Baseball Game Preview: Matanzas Pirates vs. St. Augustine Yellow Jackets

Matanzas hasn't had much luck against St. Augustine recently, but that could start to change on Monday. Matanzas will head out on the road to face off against St. Augustine at 7:00 p.m. Neither of those teams managed to put together many runs in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

Matanzas fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Seabreeze on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Sandcrabs by a score of 3-2. The Pirates' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it eight in a row.

Matanzas saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nick Pandich, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.

Meanwhile, St. Augustine can bid farewell to their six-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 1-0 victory over Fernandina Beach. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Yellow Jackets have posted since March 6th.

The result came thanks to Xavier Ahr's shutout, as he gave up just three hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because St. Augustine is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-9 otherwise.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jordan Petty, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

St. Augustine's victory bumped their record up to 8-11. As for Matanzas, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-17.

Matanzas couldn't quite get it done against St. Augustine in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 as they fell 6-1. Can Matanzas avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
