Softball Game Preview: Calvary Baptist Cougars vs. Hawthorne Cougars

Calvary Baptist will take on Hawthorne at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Calvary Baptist's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. They put the hurt on Academy of Careers & Exploration with a sharp 14-0 win. Winning may never get old, but the Cougars sure are getting used to it with their eighth in a row.

Reagan Hanson was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Calvary Baptist let Isabel Chatoney and Isabella Macias run wild. Chatoney went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs, while Macias got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, one double, and one RBI. Those five RBI gave Chatoney a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bri Rosales, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

Calvary Baptist always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .581. They are 13-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, it can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Hawthorne had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They were the clear victors by a 17-8 margin over the Vaqueros. The victory continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Vaqueros: they've now won five in a row.

Calvary Baptist pushed their record up to 15-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.7 runs over those games. As for Hawthorne, the win got them back to even at 13-13.
