Baseball Game Preview: Elgin Comets vs. Mt. Gilead Indians

The Elgin Comets are taking a road trip to square off against the Mt. Gilead Indians at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Elgin will be strutting in after a victory while Mt. Gilead will be coming in after a loss.

Having struggled with three defeats in a row, Elgin turned things around against Hardin Northern on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 14-2 margin over the Polar Bears. The Comets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by seven runs or more this season.

Colton Ware was excellent, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, three runs, and three doubles. He has become a key player for Elgin: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 4-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Peyton Zempter, who went 3-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Elgin was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .541. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Mt. Gilead came up short against Centerburg on Thursday, falling 7-1.

Mt. Gilead's loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for Elgin, they now have a winning record of 8-7.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Elgin has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mt. Gilead struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Everything went Elgin's way against Mt. Gilead when the teams last played back in April of 2025, as Elgin made off with a 9-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Comets since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
