Softball Preview: Union Grove Lions vs. Overton Mustangs

For the second straight game, Union Grove will face off against Overton. The Lions will head out to challenge the Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

Last Tuesday, Union Grove came up short against Overton and fell 10-5. The Lions haven't had much luck with the Mustangs recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.

For Overton's part, Kelsey Vaught made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Vaught has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Anna Perkins and Halle Mayfield did most of the damage at the plate: Perkins scored two runs while going 4-for-4, while Mayfield went 1-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Mayfield has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Kasha Williams, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

Overton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Union Grove only posted a batting average of .179.

The win was the 12th in a row for Overton, bringing their record up to 15-8-1. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.2 runs over those games. As for Union Grove, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-7.
