Recap: Valmeyer Pirates vs. New Athens Yellow Jackets
In what's become a running theme this season, the Valmeyer Pirates gave their fans yet another huge win on Thursday. Everything went their way against New Athens as Valmeyer made off with a 55-35 victory. The squad ran away with 47 points in the first half and mostly just sat on those to pick up the win.
Valmeyer had a senior duo take command as Brooke Miller dropped a double-double on 25 points and 19 rebounds and Kierstin Miller dropped a double-double on 14 points and 19 rebounds. Miller hasn't dropped below two steals for nine straight games. Another player making a difference was Kaleigh Hicks, who scored three points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Despite the loss, New Athens still got an impressive performance from Ella Bohn, who scored eight points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Bohn is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Mallory Kohnen, who scored six points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, New Athens were working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Valmeyer's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-4. As for New Athens, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-14.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Valmeyer will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Red Bud at 6:00 p.m. on January 22nd.
