Softball Recap: PikeView Victorious

PikeView took a 19-run defeat the last time they faced off against Bluefield, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Panthers had just enough and edged out the Beavers 6-5. For the Panthers, this counts as revenge for the 19-0 victory the Beavers walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2024.

Shelby Maddox spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five runs (all of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 14 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Taylor Wright was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double. Those two hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylie Honaker, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

PikeView has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Bluefield, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 1-8.

PikeView will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Greenbrier West at 5:30 p.m. on the 22nd. As for Bluefield, they will head out to take on Summers County at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The Beavers are facing the Bobcats at the right time seeing as the Bobcats are stuck on a three-game losing streak.
