Baseball Recap: Calhoun Takes a Loss

Calhoun had lost three straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 7-6 to make it four. They came up short against the Carrollton Hawks, falling 10-3. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Calhoun saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Earl Elmore, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one double. Easton Wallendorf was another, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run.

As for Carrollton, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games.

On Carrollton's side, Charlie Stumpf made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Stumpf has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three runs. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jayce Steinkuehler, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Wyatt Ross, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Looking ahead, Calhoun will head out on the road to challenge Metro-East Lutheran at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Knights have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.08 runs per game on average), something the Warriors will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Carrollton, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Jersey at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
