The Mountain View Spartans will venture away from home to face off against the Aragon Dons at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Mountain View's pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so Aragon's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Mountain View is headed into Saturday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Friday. They came up short against Los Gatos, falling 9-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Spartans have suffered since March 27, 2024.
Mountain View got a good showing from Makaio Mo'Unga, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, Mountain View saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Austin Xu, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Aragon made easy work of El Camino last Thursday and carried off an 8-2 win.
Josh Jacobs made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jordan Kiaaina, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Saxon Lucia was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.
Aragon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Mountain View's loss dropped their record down to 9-5. As for Aragon, their record is now 4-6.
Mountain View's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's match. The Spartans have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Aragon, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Mountain View continue to outrun the ball?
Mountain View came out on top in a nail-biter against Aragon in their previous meeting back in April of 2023, sneaking past 13-12. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
