Athens has gone 7-1 against New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Warriors will venture away from home to challenge the Vipers at 7:00 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
On Friday, Athens was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 22-18 to PORTA/Ashland-Chandlerville Central/Greenview. The Warriors have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite the defeat, Athens got top-tier performance from Gage Honn, who rushed for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 7.3 yards per carry.
Even if they lost, Athens' defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. In that department, Logan Schou was the leader with two.
Meanwhile, New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly played a tough contest on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 53-7 loss at the hands of Williamsville. While losing is never fun, the Vipers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois football rankings (they are ranked 289th, while the Bullets are ranked 95th).
Athens will have to contain Conner Stinson as he made an impact in New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly's last game. He rushed for 80 yards and one score.incredibly, Stinson got all that yardage with just one huge run
The loss was their first at home , dropping their record down to 4-3. As for New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly, their defeat dropped their record down to an identical 4-3.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Athens has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 285.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly struggles in that department as they've been averaging 178.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Athens was dealt a bruising 34-7 loss at the hands of New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Warriors, Clark Anthony nelson (who rushed for 216 yards and four TDs while picking up 11.4 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
