Softball Recap: School Without Walls Find Success

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Woodson, School Without Walls was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 17-15 victory over the Maret Frogs. This was payback for the Penguins, who suffered a 16-4 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Maeve Cunningham and Harper Barlow did most of the damage at the plate: Cunningham scored three runs and stole three bases while getting on base in all six of her plate appearances, while Barlow went a perfect 5-for-5 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run. The dominant performance also gave Cunningham a new career-high in RBI (three). Abigail Dowd was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of her six plate appearances.

School Without Walls always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .704. Their OBP was a full 0 higher than the also-impressive .548 that Maret posted.

With the win, School Without Walls broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 6-3. As for Maret, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.

Coming up, School Without Walls will look to defend their home field on Monday against Washington Latin Public Charter School at 4:00 p.m. The Lions have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.17 runs per game on average), something the Penguins will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Maret, they will head out on the road to square off against Bishop McNamara at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Frogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Mustangs have averaged an impressive 7.9 runs per game this season.
