Basketball Recap: St. John's Islanders vs. Baptist Hill Bobcats

The St. John's Islanders won the last time they faced the Baptist Hill Bobcats, and things went their way on Tuesday too. St. John's came out on top against the Bobcats by a score of 44-36. That's two games straight that St. John's has won by exactly eight points.

St. John's found their leader in underclassman Daeshia Buford, who scored 20 points along with seven steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Buford has scored at least a third of St. John's points. Kaniya Smith was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with seven assists and four steals.

Baptist Hill's loss came despite strong showings from Shaniah Townsend and Malaya Hill. Townsend scored 17 points along with five rebounds and four steals, while Hill scored ten points along with six steals. Hill has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 14 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Emerald Alford, who scored two points along with eight rebounds and two steals.

The win got St. John's back to even at 9-9. As for Baptist Hill, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost six of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-11 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. John's won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the NaviGators at 6:00 p.m. on January 31st. Lowcountry Leadership is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. As for Baptist Hill, they will head out on the road to challenge the Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
