Glenwood Springs and Summit are an even 5-5 against one another since June of 2021, but likely not for long. The Demons will square off against the Tigers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Glenwood Springs barely beat Battle Mountain the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Demons put the hurt on the Huskies with a sharp 12-5 win on Tuesday. Winning may never get old, but the Demons sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.
Grady Aguirre made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Jackson Irving and Noah Smith did most of the damage at the plate: Irving went 3-for-5 with three RBI, one run, and one double, while Smith got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs. Evan Neuman was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Glenwood Springs always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .553. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Battle Mountain only posted an OBP of .378.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Summit). They blew past Rifle 24-14 last Saturday. The victory was familiar territory for the Tigers, who have now won three games in a row.
Summit let Hogan Tobias and Matty Misch run wild. Tobias got on base in four of his six plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Misch got on base in four of his five plate appearances with five runs and one RBI. Tobias is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Gus Bradford, who went 4-for-6 with two RBI and one run.
Glenwood Springs' win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-5. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Summit, their record is now 11-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Glenwood Springs has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Summit struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Glenwood Springs suffered a grim 11-2 defeat to Summit when the teams last played on April 8th. Can the Demons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
