Baseball Recap: Marlington Drops Highest Score of Season Against Crestview

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Marlington). They walked away with a 9-5 victory over the Crestview Rebels on Friday. While the Dukes didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Logan Smith made a splash while hitting and pitching. He tossed 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Smith was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That stolen base marked the first that he has snagged this season.

Smith wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Dylan Heatherington, who went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs. Those three stolen bases gave Heatherington a new career-high. Tatem Hoffman also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Marlington has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Crestview, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season.

Marlington will head out on the road to face off against Minerva at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Crestview, they will look to defend their home field on Monday against Champion at 5:00 p.m.
