Basketball Recap: Mater Dei Takes a Loss

Mater Dei was the 55-54 winner over Breese Central when they last played one another back in December of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Mater Dei Knights took a 41-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Breese Central Cougars on Friday. The game marked the Knights' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Despite the loss, Mater Dei still got an impressive performance from Elliott Rakers, who went 5 for 6 en route to 10 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists. The dominant performance gave Rakers a new career-high in assists. Another player making a difference was Luke Brefeld, who went 6 of 8 to rack up 12 points.

Mater Dei's loss dropped their record down to 19-9. As for Breese Central, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 21-5 record this season.

Coming up, Mater Dei will face off against Metro-East Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Breese Central, they will take on Columbia at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the match red-hot, with Columbia sitting on ten straight victories and Breese Central on five.
