League recap: Lawrence Free State extends winning streak with victory over Lawrence

Adding to the longest winning streak in Sunflower this week, Lawrence Free State beat Lawrence 28-10. The win marks fourth in a row for the the Firebirds.

Shawnee Mission Northwest was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from 11th to eighth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Cougars triumphed over West 17-14.

Leavenworth's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Landry Hodges threw for 155 and 2 touchdowns and Isaiah Ross had 97 yards receiving. On the ground Jason Randall contributed 120 yards. Randall helped Leavenworth's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 26 yards.

Connor Alexander made the biggest impact on defense this week as Olathe East topped South. The 6-foot-3 senior forced 2 fumbles and recorded 1 fumble.

Hodges put up the best numbers through the air as the PIONEERS fell to Wyandotte. Hodges' favorite target this week was Ross, who caught 8 passes for 97 yards.

6-foot-5 quarterback AJ Verdini of the Vikings is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1,113. He has also thrown 8 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Ross. The Leavenworth star has 33 catches for 507 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Lawrence Free State takes on Shawnee Mission Northwest. Robert Lisher's team is in first place, while Linn Hibbs' team is in eighth place.

The Cougars and West played the closest game in Sunflower this week, with the Cougars eventually emerging with a 17-14 victory.
