Baseball Game Preview: Derby Red Raiders vs. Wolcott Eagles

Derby is 0-10 against Wolcott since April of 2016 but things could change on Wednesday. The Red Raiders are taking a road trip to take on the Eagles at 4:00 p.m. Derby is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.

Derby was handed a six-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Tuesday. They skirted past Crosby 9-7. The Red Raiders haven't had any issues with the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.

Vincent Nuzzo made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Derby is 5-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 2-3 otherwise. Nuzzo was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2025.

In other batting news, Isaac McNeill and Brooklyn Fernandez did most of the damage at the plate: McNeill went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple, while Fernandez went 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. McNeill has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last six times he's played. D.J. Anroman also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Wolcott duked it out with St. Paul Catholic on Monday. The Eagles came up short against the Falcons, falling 9-2.

Derby's record now sits at 7-4. As for Wolcott, their loss dropped their record down to 4-6.

Derby suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Wolcott in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Can the Red Raiders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
