Preview: Kirby Cougars vs. Overton Wolverines
The Kirby Cougars will head out on the road to challenge the Overton Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a four-game winning streak alive.
On Wednesday, Kirby was able to grind out a solid win over Middle College, taking the game 9-5.
Chrismer Disla Vargas was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Disla Vargas was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Juan Recio was excellent, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Elijah Cody was another key contributor, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, even though Hillcrest scored an imposing 12 runs on Wednesday, Overton still came out on top. Everything went Overton's way against Hillcrest as Overton made off with a 21-12 victory. Overton might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won three matches by nine runs or more this season.
The team relied heavily on Tyler Lewellen, who fired off two home runs, five RBI, and a stolen base while going 2-for-3. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Khamari McElroy, who scored three runs and stole five bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Kirby pushed their record up to 6-1 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs per game. As for Overton, their record now sits at 4-2.
