Baseball Game Preview: Godby Cougars vs. Leon Lions

Godby is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Leon a five-game streak of away losses. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Thursday. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Godby Cougars duke it out with Leon Lions at 4:30 p.m. Godby is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.

Godby will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Saturday, then bounced right back against Jefferson County on Wednesday. Godby was the clear victor by a 14-4 margin over Jefferson County. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive victory against them.

Edwin Ramirez was a major factor no matter where he played. He tossed five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off only one hit. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five). He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3. Godby is 2-1 when Ramirez posts two or more stolen bases, but 1-8 otherwise.

In other batting news, Godby got a massive performance out of Amari Jones, who scored three runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases Jones has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaylen Roque, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4.

Godby kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.7 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 8.8.

Meanwhile, Tuesday just wasn't the day for Leon's offense. They lost 8-0 to Lincoln on Tuesday.

Leon's loss dropped their record down to 10-7. As for Godby, their win bumped their record up to 3-9.

Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Godby has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .457. However, it's not like Leon struggles in that department as they've averaged .437. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
