Basketball Recap: Sayre Comes Up Short

Sayre suffered their biggest defeat since January 30, 2024 on Wednesday. They came up short against the St. Xavier Tigers, falling 83-59. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kentucky basketball rankings (they are ranked 53rd, while the Tigers are ranked first).

Bryce Johnson was the offensive standout of the game as he went 7-for-10 en route to 19 points. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Hanke, who made all 6 shots he took racking up 12 points and seven boards.

Sayre has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 12-9 record this season. As for St. Xavier, the victory (which was their 12th in a row) raised their record to 23-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sayre will square off against Frederick Douglass at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Frederick Douglass knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four matches -- so hopefully Sayre likes a good challenge. As for St. Xavier, they will be playing at home against Seneca at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
