Softball Game Preview: Granite Hills Eagles vs. La Costa Canyon Mavericks

The Granite Hills Eagles are taking a road trip to square off against the La Costa Canyon Mavericks at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Granite Hills is coming into the game on a five-game losing streak.

Granite Hills' tournament run continued when they took on West Hills on Friday. Granite Hills fell just short of West Hills by a score of 11-10. That's two games in a row now that the Eagles have lost by just one run.

Alexis Mujica and Jazlyn Thomas stepped up to the plate in a big way. Mujica went 3-for-4 with six RBI, while Thomas scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. That's the most RBI Mujica has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Mia Downes, who scored a run while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.

La Costa Canyon hadn't beaten Rancho Bernardo on the road since March 23, 2017 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. La Costa Canyon sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over Rancho Bernardo.

Addy Brown spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Evan Connerley, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances. Sophie Nguyen also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

Granite Hills' defeat dropped their record down to 2-7-1. As for La Costa Canyon, their win ended a three-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-3.

La Costa Canyon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Granite Hills hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .330. It's a different story for La Costa Canyon, though, as they've only averaged .205. Will they be able to contain Granite Hills' hitters?

Granite Hills couldn't quite get it done against La Costa Canyon in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 as they fell 5-2. Can Granite Hills avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
