Softball Recap: Winthrop Comes Up Short

Winthrop extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to nine on Tuesday, dropping them down to 0-7. They came up short against the Spruce Mountain Phoenix, falling 14-1. The Ramblers were not able to make up for their loss to the Phoenix from their previous meeting back in May of 2025.

As for Spruce Mountain, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-6. 14 seems to be a good number for them as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

For Spruce Mountain's part, Rylee Turner was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Turner was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one triple and one stolen base. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.

In other batting news, Santika Hodgkin was incredible, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. She continues to improve, besting her previous run total in each of the last three games she's played. Ashley Nelson also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Looking ahead, Winthrop will venture away from home to challenge Mount Abram at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Spruce Mountain, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Hall-Dale at 4:00 p.m. on June 2.
