Volleyball Recap: Jonathan Nogueira Leads a Balanced Effort to Beat Freedom

It's playoff time, and Horizon had no trouble coming through when it counted. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Freedom Patriots on Tuesday, sneaking past 3-2. This was a revenge game for the Hawks: when they faced off against the Patriots two weeks ago, they had to take a 3-2 defeat.

Horizon was actually outscored in aggregate across those five sets (109-104), but they still managed to win. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 20-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 17-15.

Horizon's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jonathan Nogueira, who had 22 digs and one assist. Nogueira is on a roll when it comes to digs, as he's now had ten or more in each of the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Marco Soares, who had 15 digs.

Despite the loss, Freedom still got an impressive performance from Fernando Mendez, who had 14 digs and one assist.

Horizon is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-10 record this season. As for Freedom, their loss ended a 19-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 24-6.

Horizon has already played their next game, a 3-0 defeat against Winter Park on the 16th. Freedom does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
