Softball Recap: Gibault Catholic Triumphs

While Gibault Catholic's win against Marquette Catholic wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Gibault Catholic had just enough and edged out Marquette Catholic 11-9. That's two games straight that the Hawks have won by exactly two runs.

Sophie Winkeler was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Karina Jerkatis, who scored three runs while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Lauren Lanham was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-5.

Gibault Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.

The victory got Gibault Catholic back to even at 2-2. As for Marquette Catholic, they are on a four-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Coming up, it'll be a Battle of the Birds when Gibault Catholic Hawks take on Civic Memorial Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Marquette Catholic, they will head out on the road to challenge Cahokia at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
