Softball Game Preview: Monterey Plainsmen vs. Lubbock-Cooper Pirates

Monterey has won three straight games at home, while Lubbock-Cooper has won three straight on the road dating back to last season, but those streaks won't matter much on Tuesday. The Plainsmen will host the Pirates at 6:30 p.m. Monterey has given up an average of 6.7 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Monterey is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Amarillo just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Friday. They took an 11-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sandies.

Meanwhile, Lubbock-Cooper made easy work of Tascosa on Friday and carried off a 19-5 victory. Considering the Pirates have won 18 contests by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Brooklyn Ray looked comfortable as she struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and not a single walk). With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5 strikeouts per game.

At the plate, Tatum Southard was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Addison Gunset, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Lubbock-Cooper kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Lubbock-Cooper has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 18 of their last 20 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.9 runs over those games. As for Monterey, their loss dropped their record down to 12-10.
