Basketball Recap: Mcintosh County Academy Snags 16th Victory in Last 18 Games

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only McIntosh County Academy walked away with it. They took down the Wheeler County Bulldogs 72-58 on Wednesday. Given the Buccaneers' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 90th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 384th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead McIntosh County Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jayden Ellis, who posted 21 points. Ellis is also on a roll when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 43% in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Craig Battle, who went 6-for-13 en route to 13 points and seven rebounds.

McIntosh County Academy was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They racked up six more assists than Wheeler County's also-impressive total of ten.

Michael Wright Jr. and Tyree Travis certainly did their best on Wednesday to avoid the loss. Wright Jr. dropped a double-double with 21 points and ten boards, while Travis dropped a double-double with 18 points and ten rebounds. With that strong performance, Wright Jr. is now averaging an impressive 8 boards per game. Reco Wooten was another key player, putting up eight points.

McIntosh County Academy is on a roll lately: they've won 16 of their last 18 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-5 record this season. Wheeler County's loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 13-10.

Coming up, McIntosh County Academy will square off against Taylor County at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Taylor County will roll in looking for their 13th straight victory, something McIntosh County Academy surely won't give up without a fight. Wheeler County does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
