The Calallen Wildcats will head out to square off against the La Vernia Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Calallen sitting on six straight wins and La Vernia on ten.
Calallen is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They blew past Canyon Lake 42-14. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by 24 points or more this season.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Connor Klostermann and Jace Wheeler. Klostermann had a great game and rushed for 85 yards and two scores on only 12 carries. Meanwhile, Wheeler was balling out in the loss, throwing for 222 yards and a pair of TDs, while also rushing for 80 yards on only ten carries.
Calallen didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Drayson Gamez and Chris Durham. Gamez got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, La Vernia strolled past Somerset with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 51-33. Given the Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 142nd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 369th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Calallen better keep an eye on TY CARTER. He was instrumental in La Vernia's win, rushing for 254 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 15.9 yards per carry. Those 254 rushing yards gave CARTER a new career-high. Another player making a difference was SEAN GARZA, who rushed for 63 yards and one score on only seven carries.
La Vernia was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 387 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in 20 consecutive contests dating back to last season.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for La Vernia, racking up 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of CARTER, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Calallen's record is now 10-2. As for La Vernia, their record now sits at 11-1.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Calallen has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 247.1 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like La Vernia struggles in that department as they've been averaging 264 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
