Worley cracks 10,000-yard mark to lead stat stars

Considering the thousands upon thousands of quarterbacks who have played high school football in the United States over the past century, it's somewhat amazing that only about 30 have ever thrown for more than 10,000 yards in their career.

Even more amazing is that it could happen three times this month.

Last week, Kenton (Ohio) quarterback Maty Mauk went over 10,000 yards passing in his career. Next week, L.T. Pfaff of Atoka (Okla.) could go over 10 grand. He became the all-time leading passer in Oklahoma last week and has 9,849 yards in his career.

This past weekend, Justin Worley of Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.) joined the elite group as he threw for 434 yards and four touchdowns in a win over North Augusta last week. Worley's unofficial career totals find him with 10,133 yards in a little over three seasons on the Northwestern varsity.



By all accounts, Worley is the third South Carolina quarterback to go over the 10,000 mark. While the National Federation of High Schools Record Book does not list any quarterbacks from South Carolina with more than 10,000 yards, Byrnes quarterbacks Willie Korn (2003-06) and Chas Dodd (2006-09) are both known to have eclipsed the mark. Dodd is believed to be the state's all-time yardage leader with 10,640 yards while Korn is right behind with 10,626. (Note: Clemson football guide has Korn listed with 10,716 career yards, however Byrnes statkeepers compiled the 10,626 total).

Worley wasn't expected to be the next South Carolina quarterback over 10,000 yards. Everett Golson of Myrtle Beach was the favorite to do so, but a foot injury against Byrnes in the second game of the season has sidelined the four-year starter. He unofficially has 9,809 yards and could join Worley, Korn and Dodd as soon as he returns.

Golson is believed to have set the state touchdown passing mark before he went down with an injury. He had four touchdowns in his first game of the season, giving him 125 for his career. That breaks the mark of 123 set by Korn. Worley could take over that mark soon, however, as he has 120 heading into this week.
