Basketball Recap: South Pointe's Winning Streak Snapped at Three Games

After a string of three wins, South Pointe's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They received a blow as they fell 64-45 to the Cardinal Newman Cardinals.

Despite the loss, South Pointe still got an impressive performance from Ry'Darius Hill, who went 8 for 19 on his way to 23 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. That's the most steals Hill has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Landon Hawkins, who posted seven points.

Leading Cardinal Newman to victory were Elton Smith Jr. and Nigel Chivers. Smith Jr. dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten boards, while Chivers went 8 of 15 on his way to 21 points. Smith Jr. is becoming a predictor of Cardinal Newman's success: when he posts at least ten boards the team is 3-1 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Luis Echevarria was another key player, putting up ten points.

South Pointe's defeat dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Cardinal Newman, they now have a winning record of 5-4.

South Pointe wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 60-57 victory against Lower Richland on the 27th. As for Cardinal Newman, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 61-42 loss against Blue Ridge on the 27th.
