Mathis snaps eight-game streak of losses on the road

Recap: Mathis Pirates vs. Odem Owls

The Mathis Pirates had to endure a 12-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They snuck past Odem with a 35-29 victory on Friday. Mathis' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Mathis can attribute much of their success to Kailey Garcia, who scored 16 points along with eight rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Garcia has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Amerie Smith, who scored ten points along with two steals.

Several Owls players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Harper Dredla, who scored five points along with six rebounds and four steals. Another player making a difference was Aliana Montez, who scored seven points along with two blocks.

Mathis' victory ended a eight-game drought on the road and puts them at 2-19. As for Odem, they bumped their record down to 2-25 with that loss, which was their sixth straight at home.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mathis on the road again on Wednesday and play against George West at 6:15 p.m. on January 17th. As for Odem, they will face off against Goliad at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
