Baseball Recap: Avon Comes Up Short

Avon had lost four straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 5-8 to make it five. They fell just short of the Midview Middies by a score of 9-7. The Eagles were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Middies earlier this season, when they won 7-4.

Avon got a good showing from Ben Strichek, who tossed 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.

At the plate, Jason Gillespie was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Avon: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-7 otherwise. Robby Sykora also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

As for Midview, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-11. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On Midview's side, Kaiden Vogelpohl was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Vogelpohl a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Daniel Melendez, who went 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Avon will face off against Brunswick at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Midview, they will challenge Hudson at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
