Softball Recap: Boaz Pirates vs. Fort Payne Wildcats

Boaz won the last time they faced Fort Payne and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Pirates came out on top in a nail-biter against the Wildcats, sneaking past 7-6. The game was the first time the Pirates have beaten the Wildcats on their field since February 23, 2018.

Bailey Lusk made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Lusk was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, Grier Maples was incredible, scoring two runs while going 4-for-4. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Allie Simpson, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Boaz always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fort Payne only posted an OBP of .371.

The win (which was Boaz's fourth in a row) raised their record to 20-7-1. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.5 runs across that stretch. As for Fort Payne, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-12.

Looking ahead, Boaz will head out to square off against Sardis at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Lions' pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so the Pirates' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Fort Payne, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Southside at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
