I-70 recap Oct. 3, 2012
St. Paul Lutheran extended the longest winning streak in I-70 this week by beating Crest Ridge, 39-18. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Saints.
Santa Fe was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to third in the league. The Chiefs defeated Sweet Springs 57-24 earlier in the week.
The Greyhounds' dynamic duo of Jeffery Hall and Mario Persell proved tough for Santa Fe to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Hall threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns and Persell had 85 yards receiving. Jeffrey Dierker helped Sweet Springs' passing attack out by catching six balls for 54 yards.
Ethan Matthews was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 26 carries, he ran for 127 yards as the Cougars lost to Andy Frerking's team. Teammate Justin Donald added to the ground attack by rushing for 60 yards.
6-foot-0 quarterback Matthews of Crest Ridge is the league leader in passing yards this season with 491. He has also thrown two touchdowns. On the ground, Orrick's Derrick Dennis has rushed for 739 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Hall. The Sweet Springs star has 11 catches for 253 yards.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Wellington-Napoleon takes on St. Paul Lutheran. The Tigers have allowed 122 points this season, while Larry Laubenstein's team has given up 41. Wellington-Napoleon allowed 15 points last week as it bested Concordia.
There should be lots of points scored when Melvin Baker's team and Chris Cavanah's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Greyhounds comes in having scored 98 this season, while the Cougars have scored 146. Sweet Springs scored 24 points last week as it fell to the Chiefs.
The Saints made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 5,643 from 6,348. The improvement came about via a 39-18 victory over Crest Ridge last week.
