Softball Recap: Draughn Wins Going Away Against Mountain Heritage

It was a proper cat-fight when Draughn challenged Mountain Heritage on Friday. The Wildcats blew past the Cougars 12-2. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matches by six runs or more this season.

Avie Helton made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Helton was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lindsey Hensley, who went a perfect 5-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Maria Medrano, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Draughn was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .588. They are a perfect 11-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Draughn's victory bumped their record up to 13-9. As for Mountain Heritage, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 5-10.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Draughn will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Leadership Academy at 6:30 p.m. The Falcons have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.8 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Mountain Heritage, they are taking a road trip to square off against Swain County at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Maroon Devils have averaged an impressive 8.4 runs per game this season.
