Softball Recap: Bernards Picks Up Third Consecutive Victory

Bernards had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Gill St. Bernard's Knights by a score of 9-5. With that victory, the Mountaineers brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Gabby Mongo made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 18 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. Those two runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brooke Helpinstill, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two triples, three RBI, and one run. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Lily Greco, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

Bernards was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .452. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive contests.

Bernards' record now sits at 12-10. As for Gill St. Bernard's, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-16.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Bernards will square off against South Hunterdon at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Gill St. Bernard's, they will face off against Morristown-Beard at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
