Union faced Newton County in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Yellowjackets fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 2-1. The Yellowjackets' defeat signaled the end of their 11-game winning streak.

In a back-and-forth that saw neither team win consecutive sets, Union sadly dropped the once that decided the match. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 29-27, 22-25, 15-6.

Ava Smith paced Union's offense, picking up 12 kills. Smith got some help from Abigail Cleveland and her 19 assists. Cleveland also made an impact serving: she shared the team lead in aces with Julia Harrison, each putting up two.

Kolbie Wansley was a one-woman wrecking crew For Newton County. as she had 19 digs and two aces. The dominant performance also gave Wansley a new career-high in assists (five).

Union's loss dropped their record down to 26-9. As for Newton County, their win was their 14th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 29-5.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: the Cougars beat Union by a score of 2-1 later that day.
