Four-star UNC commit ends career with 16-1 record and state title as a starter.
Senior quarterback
Travis Burgess of
Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) announced on social media Thursday that he is out for the season after suffering an injury in a 24-19 win over Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Rabun Gap, Ga) last week.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound North Carolina commit was 12 of 21 with 195 passing yards at the time of his injury for the Rams, who are 2-0 and ranked No. 5 in the nation.
Burgess went 16-1 in his career as a starter with 3,367 yards and 32 touchdowns through the air. He added 884 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Burgess is rated as the No. 7
quarterback in the Class of 2026 and the No. 65 player overall by
247Sports.
The future Tar Heel has been on varsity since his 2022 and played in 16 games as a backup during his freshman and sophomore year, throwing 99 passes.
His first career start was a 20-19 loss against Collins Hill (Suwanee, Ga.) to start his junior year. Since, the Rams have won 16 straight games including the 2024 Class 6A state championship against Carrollton. Burgess passed for 180 yards and ran for 57 more as Grayson took down a Julian Lewis-led Trojans team 38-24.
Burgess began the 2025 season by throwing for three touchdowns and running for another in the Rams 51-3 win over Collins Hill. His performance earned him player of the game honors in the inaugural MaxPreps Game of the Week.
After Burgess was injured last week, junior
Deuce Smith stepped in and went 5 of 7 with 43 yards and an interception. Smith was the backup quarterback last year and has 486 passing yards and six touchdowns against one interception while completing 70.4 percent of his passes in his career.
Grayson plays No. 19 Thompson at home tomorrow and Smith will likely get his first start.
