Basketball Game Preview: St. Augustine Catholic Wolves vs. Benson Bobcats

St. Augustine Catholic is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Lourdes Catholic: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that St. Augustine Catholic blew Lourdes Catholic out of the water with a 62-29 final score. The Wolves pushed the score to 45-22 by the end of the third, a deficit the Warriors had little chance of recovering from.

St. Augustine Catholic found their leader in sophomore Jovanni Fernandez, who dropped a triple-double on 17 points, 15 boards, and ten assists. The dominant performance gave Fernandez a new career-high in assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Nico Martinez, who posted nine points along with five rebounds and four steals.

St. Augustine Catholic was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 11 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 5.9.

Meanwhile, Benson strolled past Santa Rita with points to spare on Thursday, taking the game 71-54.

St. Augustine Catholic moved to 5-11 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak. As for Benson, their win bumped their record up to 7-15.

St. Augustine Catholic lost to Benson on the road by a decisive 61-45 margin in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. Can St. Augustine Catholic avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
