Baseball Recap: Hempfield Area Comes Up Short

Hempfield Area extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 5-10 in the process. They came up short against the Canon-McMillan Big Macs, falling 12-1. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since April 19, 2023, but that streak is no more.

Hempfield Area got a good showing from Josh Cayer, who tossed four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits.

At the plate, Hempfield Area saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Chase Sikorski, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one double and one RBI.

As for Canon-McMillan, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-4. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by six runs or more this season.

On Canon-McMillan's side, M.J. Maruschak made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and not a single walk). Maruschak has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Troy Stimpson, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. That's the most RBI he has posted since April 1st. The team also got some help courtesy of Colin Yeager, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

While Hempfield Area had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
